What Are Submersible Water Pumps?
Just as the name suggests these pumps are completely submerged in water in order to drain bodies of unwanted water. These are usually activated using an automatic float-activated switch that will turn the unit on as soon as it is underwater so you do not need to worry about wading through cold or dirty water to put your pump into position, likewise once the water level drops to the minimum operation level the unit will then turn itself back off, so you don’t need to worry about constantly monitoring the progress.
Submersible water pumps are more efficient than above-ground pumps since they are already under the water it is easier for them to push the water upwards through the hose, this usually means that you can empty even large areas of unwanted water much easier and quicker all while using less energy.
Is It Safe to Submerge a Pump?
Some apprehension is understandable when it comes to submerging electrical items underwater, however, you can rest assured that all our pumps have gone through rigorous testing. Each pump also holds an IP rating, after all by their very nature it is important they are waterproof, and an IP rating is a certification that shows how water-resistant a product is. All submersible pumps on our website hold a waterproof rating of IPX8 – this means it is protected against constant immersion.
How Deep Can They Be Submerged?
As mentioned when choosing a submersible pump, it is important to ensure that it holds an adequate IP rating of IPX8 to ensure that it is safe to be constantly submerged, the next thing to look at is the maximum depth recommended by the manufacturer this will usually be dictated by other factors alongside the waterproof rating including the materials used. All the submersible pumps on our website can be safely submerged in depths up to 7m (23ft) making them ideal for a wide range of jobs both domestic and professional.
How Quickly Do They Drain?
As we have mentioned submersible water pumps are both more efficient and faster when it comes to draining water than above-ground pumps, however just how fast are they able to drain water? Well, this depends entirely on how powerful your pump is. The flow rate, which is the rate at which your pump is able to move water often shown as litres per hour will vary depending on how powerful the motor in your submersible pump is. So, it is important to check the flow rate of your pump before making a purchase, for example, if you have an incredibly large area of water that needs darning a more powerful pump will ensure the job is done much more quickly, however, if you only intend to use your pump to empty a hot tub which a relatively small area of water as most hot tubs on average will hold between 2000-4000 litres of water a smaller motor will be more than sufficient. Our range of powerful 1100w submersible pumps can move an incredible 18,000L per hour, which means it can make short work of large-scale jobs.
What Kind of Hose Should I Use?
Finally, when purchasing a submersible pump it is also important that you choose the right hose if you are planning to use your pump for more heavy-duty jobs such as moving flood water or emptying water from garden pits then you will need a durable hose that can easily pass debris that is often found in this water – this is why we recommend using a lay flat hose, as they are often made with highly durable PVC so will not easily damage or tear as well as avoiding kinking and twisting which can prevent water from being drained. To make this easier we have included the option to add a lay-flat hose in a size of your choice (available in 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m, and 25m) so you can be sure to have everything you need to get the job done without making multiple purchases.
